The Day Has Been DELAYED: Attend the Zoning Board of Appeals Meeting

Chicago Tonight & WTTW story on the Portage Theater

Save The Portage Theater

Thank You all for coming out and supporting our effort to Save the Portage.

Sign up for reminders and updates!

Click here for a copy of the Letter to mail to the Zoning Board of Appeals then mail it or drop it off at Alderman Arena's office (4754 N Milwaukee)

**SAVE THE DATE - SAVE THE PORTAGE THEATER**

From Alderman John Arena:

Currently the Zoning Board of Appeals has the the Portage Theater on the agenda for Friday, April 20 at 121 North LaSalle Street 2nd Flr.

The planned discussion of the proposal to alter The Portage Theater would benefit greatly from your presence. I hope you can appear and  support of this neighborhood icon. Stay tuned for more updates."

**A Promise to keep you informed about the Portage Theater**

The recent news of actions taken by the Chicago Tabernacle has surprised many our neighbors, business partners and friends, including the PPNA.  The PPNA wishes to express that we will be monitoring the situation very closely with Alderman Arena, the Six Corner's Association and Old Irving Park Association to keep neighbors and guests apprised of changes or news that we glean from accurate sources that we can share.

As expressed in our recent public meeting, based on informal knowledge of a church considering the purchase of the Portage Theater for religious purposes, the PPNA Board sent an opinion letter last September to Alderman Arena of our concern that such purchase would have a negative impact on the continued economic development of not only our community, but also our business partners and guests to the Six Corner's area.

The PPNA will continue to learn what we can do to support the greater quality of the neighborhood and the Six Corner's Commercial district.  We will work with our neighbors, fellow community organizations, business partners as well as guests and patrons of the Portage Theater to keep the theater for its intended use. Feel free to stay in touch with us via our website, Twitter or Facebook pages and we'll make every effort to forward additional information from Alderman Arena and the meetings that we participate in, as they become available.

Sincerely,

Philip Schwartz
PPNA President

*Six Corners Economic Development Master Plan Community Workshop*

Wednesday, April 11

7:00 - 9:00pm

Lydia Home Foundation - 4839 W. Irving Park

The community will have an opportunity to weigh in on land use and business mix issues, parking concerns and physical enhancements to the Six Corners area.  The research has been done on shoppers - now it’s critical for neighbors and the community who may not shop at six corners or has ideas, criticisms, approaches to improve the Six Corner's commercial corridors create a blueprint for the future of Six Corners.

We have a voice in the development and future plans of Six Corners - but you must attend this event to be heard!

Workshop Details:
The City of Chicago Department of Housing and Economic Development, the 45th Ward
office and the Six Corners Association together are hosting a Community Workshop on the
preparation of a new Economic Development Master Plan for the Six Corners commercial
district. The workshop will be led by the Goodman Williams Group, a market research and
economic development firm.
The overall purpose of the Master Plan is to create a set of economic development and
planning strategies aimed toward revitalizing one of Chicago’s most important neighborhood
commercial districts. The Master Plan will focus on the appropriate land use and business
mix for Six Corners, district-wide marketing and promotional efforts, additional physical
enhancements, parking management, and the adaptive use of existing historic buildings.
This Community Workshop is the first of two workshops to be scheduled during the planning
process. Come hear the consulting team’s initial assessments of Six Corners and provide your
input on what will help the Six Corners business district.

**Dreaming of becoming a Ballerina?**

How cool is this? Your child can take lessons to be a ballerina right here in the nieghbirhood. Read one parents review of Fariytale Ballet. Click on the image for the full details.

My daughter has at various times taken classes at the JoffreySchool and Ballet Chicago and absolutely prefers the classes at Fairytale Ballet! Their classes are both technical and whimsical which is the perfect combination for young dancers. My daughter who loves to dance, is currently enrolled in weekly classes at Hubbard Street Dance Studio and at Fairytale Ballet. While she enjoys both programs, she is always super excited to go to Fairytale Ballet because she says it is so "fun and beautiful!" We moved to OIP last August and I was so happy to find them right around the corner!

**Yo Adrian!**

From IMDB: ROCKY

“A small time boxer gets a once in a lifetime chance to fight the heavyweight champ in a bout in which he strives to go the distance for his self-respect.”

Oh but this movie is so much more!  Some of us remember seeing it on the big screen in 1976 – it seemed so authentic.  The gritty Philadelphia streets, the quiet naturalistic acting, the raw realistic violence of the fight scenes underscored with a soundtrack that still inspires…Gonna Fly, anybody?  This film took the Academy Award for Best Picture amongst a field of films that still stand up today, including Network,  All the President’s Men, and Taxi Driver.  So what are you doing Monday night?

Thanks to Slam Internet Radio and the Keep on Keeping On Foundation, Rocky will once again be gracing the big screen – Monday, March 5 at The Portage Theater, 7:30 pm.  Tickets are $5. The proceeds will be going to Keep On whose mission is to make life easier for those living with severe physical disabilities through financial assistance and advocacy.  A local charity, they help individuals and families get proper wheelchairs, specialty vans and the like.  Check out their link below for more info.

As part of their Monthly Monday Movie Series, Slam will be broadcasting live at the theater.  Hope to see our neighbors there – enjoying an excellent movie and supporting a great cause!

**Thank You Commander McNaughton**

16th District Commander David McNaughton Goes to the 8th District
Those of us who live in the 16th District, (which includes much of the 38th Ward), are losing our excellent Police Commander, David McNaughton, who will be replacing Commander John Kupczyk of the 8th District, who passed away suddenly at the young age of 54.  The people of the 38th Ward extend our condolences to the family of Commander Kupczyk, and we thank Commander McNaughton, a lifelong resident of the 16th District, for a job well done!  During his tour as Commander of the 16th District, crime rates have steadily decreased, and the Commander was very active in attending community events and CAPS meetings.  On behalf of the residents of the 38th Ward, I wish Commander McNaughton the very best in his new assignment!
